PANTONE COLOR PICKS THIS YEAR - 2021
INSPIRATION
The inspiration for this design board is to create a space using Pantone Color picks this year – 2021. This Design Inspiration Board represents a portion of a room but more furnishing may be required, depending on the overall size of the space.
Traditionally, only one color is picked as the highlighted color, from the Pantone recommended annual color selections, but this year there are two. Only one other year has this occurred in the past two decades. In 2016 Pantone selected PANTONE 15-3919 Serenity & PANTONE 13-1520 Rose Quartz. This combination reminded me very much of the 80’s Mauve and Dusty Blue…only a bit brighter.
This year the color picks are PANTONE 17-5104 Ultimate Gray + PANTONE 13-0647 Illuminating. Alone, either color would be underwhelming and possibly uninspiring.
Pantone’s Illuminating is a vibrant and exhilarating color and Ultimate Gray is grounding and strong. This year’s duo will be stunning if balanced well with other colors, materials, finishes, forms, patterns, and textures.
THE VISION
The vision of this Design Inspiration Board is to create a balance between the juxtaposed warmth of Illuminating and the coolness of Ultimate Gray. It is to layer colors, materials, finishes, forms, patterns, and textures in a way that results in a cozy and inviting space – but with a high payoff in visual appeal.
The walls are bathed in Glidden’s White on White 300 GY 88/1014, establishing the background as the perfect canvas for the design.
Every selection is carefully weighed so that it introduces the perfect balance, scale, contrast, and harmony, and creates a satisfying rhythm throughout the finished space.
FURNISHING
The main stars of this space will be the Roma grey velvet sofa, Art Leon Modern Accent Armchair, and the Safavieh Craft Clytie Modern Abstract Rug.
The Roma Grey Velvet Sofa embodies modern lines with traditional tufting in an oversized scale. These details make it perfect in modern, contemporary, and transitional designs. The upholstery is handmade tufted, constructed with a kiln-dried, solid wood frame inside, and a stainless steel gold-tone base.
The Art Leon Modern Accent Chair, in Midium Yellow, has a beautiful velvet upholstery, rounded arms, and bolster pillow. It has solid wood frame construction and black metal legs. (available in Midium Yellow, Dark Blue, and caramel.)
The Safavieh Craft Clytie Modern abstract rug unifies all the colors that are showcased in the design inspiration and grounds the seating area. Its modern abstract pattern offers a range of black to gray, white to off-white, and yellow to gold. It provides color, oversized pattern scale, with visual texture and weight.
The tables in this design inspiration speak to each other throughout the space. This may be by material or color. There is a mix of solid and open bases when placed near serviced furnished pieces.
For example, the Kate and Laurel Travena Hexagon end tables are open base and offer contrast to the Roma Gray Velvet Sofa’s solid base. This set of nesting tables work because they offer more visual weight than a single open base table could achieve alone. Also, the glass and metal construction offers a sleek contrast to the soft velvet upholstery on the sofa.
This same thought and planning were used for each of the other pieces.
All of the soft goods were purposely selected for pattern, texture, color, and scale. They work well together to add high-impact visual interest but do not compete for individual attention.
The window treatments are an opportunity to infuse the space in the chosen style.
In this case, the full-length drapes were chosen to bring in color, pattern, and height. The simple lines and abstract patterns keep them fresh and modern-looking.
Lighting is the pinnacle in design. Design is difficult to appreciate if you cannot see it.
The Aged Brass Plated Smoke Glass Finish Chandelier has 8 lights. It, along with the bookcase and drapes, helps to unite the upper and lower portions of the room.
It can be jarring to the eye to have all the furniture on the lower third of a room’s volume and then have “things floating” above visually disconnected from the rest of the space.
Art is so important to the design of any space. Art can mean paintings, wall sculptures, sculptures on pedestals, hanging textiles., or whichever medium of art is best chosen to occupy the eye-level section of space.
Spaces generally require more than one piece of art but the ‘Moment In Time’ by Norman Wyatt Jr. is a perfect addition. There are other options included in this post.
ACCESSORIES
Accessories are the jewelry of a design and can be used to play up the personality of a space.
In this Design Inspiration Board, the decision was made to mix metals and accessory finishes to complement the juxtaposition of the combined warm and cool color palette, doing this will also support the overall transitional nature of the design.
The eye immediately is attracted to the focal accessory which is the Moonbeam Yellow Assorted Vases. These are placed in the center of the space on the rich acacia wood Hexagonal coffee table.
There is a range of forms, materials, colors, and textures represented in the accessories that help to create visual interest and unity throughout the design.
