BLUE AND WHITE OBSESSION
Free Blue and White Bedroom design. Classic or Modern this crisp color combination is a true favorite among many across the centuries and style genres.
Our obsession with the blue and white combination began many centuries ago. The highly popular blue and white Chinese porcelain is believed, based on archeologist evidence, to date before the ninth-century. Originally the blue was created in a process of multi-layer pigment and glazes and a multiple firing process. It was made widely popular in China when cobalt oxide was finally imported from Persia. Cobalt oxide’s ability to withstand high-heat porcelain firing made the process much faster and availability more accessible.
Interior design certainly is not immune to this obsession. This simple crisp color duo transcends all boundaries in design. It can be found in the highly traditional to the sleek modern interior styles.
The color to color ratio is completely up to the designer of the space. We have seen many traditional homes dressed in this much loved combination. However, I can certainly see a crisp white home with strategically chosen blue accents to punctuate the space and draw the eye – that would be gorgeous.
The Free blue and white bedroom design boards I am sharing today are subtle variation of each other. One is a classic and the other a slightly more modern take. The layout remains the same in both styles. How and where you place color and details can completely change the look and feel of any space. Simply by changing the drapes, pillows, a chair, and a few accessories you can create a new look.
FREE BLUE AND WHITE BEDROOM DESIGN - CLASSIC
THE BED
When designing any bedroom, the mattress is the most important pice in the room. It doesn’t matter how well designed or beautiful a bedroom is, if you cannot get a good nights sleep, you will not like to spend time in it. A bad mattress is like having a gorgeous sofa that you can’t sit on, it’s useless.
In the Free Blue and White Bedroom design, I have chosen to create the bed with individual components.
The headboard is a lush velvet channel design. The channels not only create a firm structure but allows the light to dance across the pile of the velvet.
The Puffy foundation is heavy duty steel construction, will hold a 1000 pounds, and allows 15″ height for under-bed storage. This is awesome if you have ever struggled to store extra comforters and pillows in those flat plastic storage boxes – which always seem to be and inch or two too tall. There is no comparison between this base and the cheap made ones that seem to be everywhere. The cheap ones don’t save you money because the will not support your mattress without a boxspring. This foundation does not require a boxspring.
The mattress is also Puffy. It is available in several thickness with features to suit any type sleeper. Puffy was designed to work with any frame or surface. This includes box springs, flat frames, slats, adjustable frames or even the floor and it ships free to your door. -always a plus.
THE BED LINENS
The bed linens are key to creating the focal point of the bedroom, which is always the bed.
To add texture to the simple color scheme, I have chosen the quilted coverlet, chenille lumbar, Norway crewel, embroidered rope pillow, and a throw. All offer texture and color without clashing or becoming too much.
WINDOWS AND FLOORS
To give this classic bedroom some true blue and white eye-candy, I have chosen these beautiful Norway Crewel window panels that match the bed pillows.
To ground the bed and seating this texture and patterned Indigo Lattus area rug was chosen. Scale is so important, its larger pattern continues the theme without becoming too matching or busy.
SEATING
Seating is very important, even in a bedroom. Is there a writing desk that will need a chair? Where will you sit to read? Is there enough space to create a seating area to share morning coffee or evening conversation? Are there small children that may need occasional seating? All these are questions to consider when determining how many and what type of seating is needs.
In this classic blue and white bedroom there is a comfortable feather filled swivel chair, or two, and an embroidered poof, which doubles as a footstool. The chair is kept white so it creates a backdrop for other colorful and textured pillows and throws. The poof lends to the overall color scheme.
SURFACES
All rooms need surfaces. Surfaces to write, sit a drink, hold needed or decorative items.
In the Classic version of the blue and white bedroom this Porter dresser and nightstands were a winner. They offer much needed surface and unexpected texture in the geometric pattern. They also bring in the brushed metal detail that can be found sprinkled around the space. The round white marble topped Milan table punctuates the seating area and continues the color scheme.
ART
Where ART thou. A room feels unfinished without art. There is so much more to selecting art than just picking something and tacking it up on the wall. Theme, scale, and form must be right to compliment the space properly. The Ecomix framed art adds height to the headboard and puts the color scheme at eye level on the focal wall, as you walk in the room. There will be a need for additional art on other walls of this room.

Select lighting to address ambient, task, and accent lighting needs. Mix and match styles so the space doesn’t look to contrived and like a showroom.
In this classic bedroom there is a mix of style, pattern, and color. The lighting all speaks to one another but makes its own statement.
ACCESSORIES
In this Free Blue and White Bedroom design the Accessories are the finishing touch of a space and serves a multitude of purposes. Accessories create a completed look, are used to distribute form, color, or texture throughout a space, and draw the eye around the space giving it better overall interest.
It is great when accessories either bring various elements of the space into one piece or juxtaposes the surrounding elements.
There are a variety of accessories in this bedroom but they help create the design story that is being told.
FREE BLUE AND WHITE BEDROOM DESIGN- MODERN
A modern take on the classic blue and white bedroom scheme was accomplished by choosing a few key pieces in a more modern esthetic. This gives the blue and white style an updated feel and opens the design doors for a many people who are not fans of a true classic design.
Many of the same furnishings are used with the exception of the drapes, decorative pillows, art work, dresser, nightstands, select lighting, and some of the accessories.
SOFT GOODS
The ornate crewel drapes were replaced with these edgy Flame blue drapes and work well with the Indigo Shibori pillow.
It still is a blue and white scheme but in a modern design pattern.
SEATING
The chair chosen for the modern bspace is aMid Century inspired Blue Tweed Thompson. It is definitely modern and brings the varienty of blues into one piece.
SURFACES
Feeling the blue. These navy chest puts a modern spin on the traditional furniture pieces. There wasn’t a true dresser in the speculative budget, with good reviews, so instead I opted for four nightstands. One for each side of the bed and two in side by side for a dresser. A dresser can be used should an acceptable one be found.
ART
STUNNING, in a word. These art pieces are breathtaking. They are from photos of morning mist above the trees. What better way to bring in nature, fill the need for art, and stay within the color scheme.
FREE BLUE AND WHITE BEDROOM DESIGN LIGHTING
Although I kept the Mirabelle Navy table lamp I did change out the bedside lamps for a set of these Jacques lamps. They offer modern lines with a nod to traditional. The metal chandelier was switched for one from the Kichler Hayman Bay collection. It offers a natural element and added texture.
ACCESSORIES
Most of the accessories from the classic style bedroom still work well in the modern style. These open pattern ginger jars add a more modern spin on the traditional solid body pieces. Also the orange flower stems offer a modern pop of color in our modern space.
FREE BLUE AND WHITE BEDROOM DESIGN COLOR SCHEME
The color scheme for both boards are blue and white with a brushed brass accent. Each space has a pop of color with pink in the classic design and orange in the modern design. In addition to color, both spaces use texture and pattern to add visual interest.

Classic and Modern design can have many interpretations. Here the style includes the use of blue and white. Design is versatile and can be adjusted to reflect a particular person in their particular space.
Typically we think of custom design as high-end, and it can be when each furnishing piece is one of a kind, but I believe anyone can create a custom design style by hand selecting semi or mass market items.
